First edition thus, condensed from "The Art of Illuminating." "What Illuminating Was" and "What Illuminating Should Be" comprise the two volumes bound together in this edition. M. Digby Wyatt traces the history of book illustration through the centuries in volume one while offering advice for the mid-nineteenth century illustrator in volume two. Includes practical instruction on setting type, gilding, and varnishing. W.R. Tymms supplies the various illustrations, most printed in color with a black and white plate opposite, of the same design, as an "outline for coloring." Example book put together by the Zaehnsdorf Company to demonstrated their ability to produce hand illuminated calligraphic documents for the use of awards and citations. Composed of three pages mounted behind heavy board borders which are mounted on hinges bound into the book. The first leaf shows an example of a document prepared for the Parishioners of Richmond thanking their minister for his eleven years of service. The second and third leaves demonstrate a document thanking the recipient for his services as Secretary of the National Fire Brigade.
